Importing machinery and equipment from China

Sourcing industrial machinery and generators from China rewards careful specification and after-sales planning. Here is how to do it without an expensive mistake.

Machinery and equipment is a high-value category where the wrong decision is expensive and slow to fix. A garment in the wrong size is a small loss. A generator with the wrong specification, or a machine that arrives without the spare parts to keep it running, can idle a whole operation. Sourcing it well from China is less about chasing the lowest price and more about specification, verification and after-sales planning.

Specify before you shop

With machinery, the specification is everything, and "similar" is not "the same". Before you compare suppliers, define exactly what you need:

  • Technical specification. Capacity, power, voltage and frequency, dimensions, output, materials, and any standards the equipment must meet.
  • Operating conditions. Equipment must suit Nigerian conditions, including the electrical supply and the environment it will run in. Confirm voltage and frequency compatibility explicitly, because a mismatch here is a common and costly error.
  • Compliance and certification. Establish what certifications matter for your equipment and market, and require evidence.

A precise specification is also your protection. If you have stated exactly what you need in writing and the goods do not meet it, you have a clear basis to act.

Verify the supplier and the machine

Machinery suppliers deserve more scrutiny than commodity sellers, because the order is larger and the stakes higher:

  • Confirm they actually make or supply this equipment, not just that they listed it. Ask for production evidence, reference customers, and a video of the specific machine.
  • Ask for a factory verification on a significant order. A third-party check of the supplier and the equipment is small against the cost of a wrong machine.
  • Understand what you are buying. A real specification sheet, test reports, and clear documentation are signs of a serious supplier.
With machinery, the specification sheet is the deal. Everything that goes wrong later usually traces back to something left vague at the start.

Plan for spares and after-sales

A machine is only as useful as its uptime, and uptime depends on parts and support. Before you buy:

  • Order critical spare parts with the machine. The parts most likely to wear or fail are far cheaper to ship with the unit than to source urgently later.
  • Confirm parts availability. Establish how you will get replacement parts in future and how long they take.
  • Clarify support. Understand what installation guidance, manuals and technical support the supplier provides, and in what language.
  • Get full documentation. Manuals, wiring and parts diagrams, and any certificates. You need these for operation, for maintenance, and sometimes for customs.

Shipping and clearing technical goods

Machinery is heavy and often bulky, which shapes your freight choice toward sea, and its value and nature can mean extra attention at customs. Get the classification right, keep the technical documentation accessible for clearance, and brief your forwarder and clearing agent on what is coming. The HS codes and duty and forwarder guides apply with extra force here.

Staging the payment on a large order

Machinery orders are significant sums, so payment structure matters. A deposit to begin production or to allocate the unit, and the balance before shipping after you have verified the machine meets specification, keeps your exposure aligned with your leverage. Avoid paying the full amount before any verification.

Each payment is made in RMB, usually on Alipay or, for very large corporate orders, sometimes by bank transfer to a company account. For Alipay settlement you do not need a Chinese account. A trade-facilitation service settles from your Naira at a locked rate, with a receipt for each staged payment, which suits the deposit-then-balance structure these orders need.

So specify precisely, verify the supplier and the machine, plan spares and support before you buy, and stage the payment against verification. When each payment is due you can make a request to settle it on Alipay from Naira. In machinery, the careful buyer who specifies and verifies beats the one who chased the cheapest quote, every time.
