Importing bags and leather goods from China

How to buy handbags and leather goods wholesale in Guangzhou, tell real leather from PU, find the right markets, and check the quality before you pay.

Leather handbags on display

Bags move fast in the Nigerian market because they finish an outfit, photograph well, and a customer will own several. Guangzhou is the obvious source: its leather-goods district carries handbags, totes, backpacks, wallets, belts and luggage in every price tier, alongside the leather and hardware markets that supply them. The trick with bags, more than almost any category, is knowing what the material really is and whether the construction will survive daily use.

Real leather, PU or genuine "split"

Bag sellers use loose language, so pin it down before you buy:

  • Full-grain or top-grain leather. The real thing, with natural grain and smell. Highest price, ages well, commands a premium on your shelf.
  • PU (polyurethane). A coated synthetic that looks like leather and is far cheaper and more uniform. Fine for fashion bags at a budget price, but it can peel and crack with hard wear.
  • Split or bonded leather. Off-cuts and leather dust reconstituted with backing. Often sold loosely as "genuine leather" but closer to PU in durability. Ask specifically.

None of these is dishonest to sell. The dishonesty is charging a leather price for PU. Confirm the material in writing on your order, handle a sample, and price and describe the bag to your own customers truthfully.

Where to buy

Guangzhou's leather-goods complexes sit close to the shoe and material markets, so a single buying trip can cover both. As with footwear, you can either buy finished bags by the carton from wholesale stalls or commission a custom design through a factory, drawing on the same Guangzhou markets and the same vetting discipline as any supplier.

If you are sourcing online rather than flying in, the rules for reading a stranger's listing still apply. Run any new factory through the steps in how to vet a 1688 supplier before you wire a deposit.

A quality checklist for bags

Bags fail at predictable points, and a disappointed customer remembers the strap that tore on day three. Before you accept a run, check:

  • Hardware. Zips that glide both ways, clasps that hold, rings and buckles that do not bend. Cheap zips are the most common failure.
  • Stitching. Tight, even seams with no loose threads, especially where straps join the body and take the load.
  • Strap anchoring. The single most important stress point. It should be reinforced or riveted, not just stitched once.
  • Lining and edges. Clean interior, sealed or painted edges, no fraying.
  • Smell and finish. Strong chemical smell or sticky coating signals cheap PU that will not wear well.
A handbag is judged at the zip and the strap join. Inspect those two points hard and you have inspected most of the bag.

For bulk orders, lean on a pre-shipment inspection that opens, zips and stress-tests sample units against the bag you approved.

Minimums, seasons and reorders

Finished-bag stalls often take small mixed orders, while custom production carries a higher minimum and a longer lead time. Bags also move with the season and with demand spikes around festivities, so plan reorders against the calendar and around Chinese New Year, when factories close for weeks.

Settling the payment

Whether you buy finished cartons or commission a design, the supplier is paid in RMB on Alipay, and custom work is staged across a deposit and a balance after inspection. A trade-facilitation service settles each from Naira at a locked rate with a receipt, so every payment is cleanly recorded.

So confirm the material in writing, inspect the zips and strap joins, buy to a minimum you can sell, and time reorders around the calendar. When a payment falls due you can make a request to pay on Alipay from Naira, and turn Guangzhou's leather district into a reliable bag business.
