Shantou and Chenghai: the toy sourcing cluster
Chenghai in Shantou makes a huge share of the world's plastic toys. Here is how the cluster works and how a Nigerian buyer sources toys and gifts well.
If you sell toys, gifts or novelty items, there is one place in China that should anchor your sourcing: Chenghai, a district of Shantou in eastern Guangdong. Chenghai is the toy capital of China, and by some accounts produces a very large share of the world's plastic toys. For a Nigerian buyer stocking for Christmas, back to school or year-round novelties, understanding this cluster is worth more than any catalogue.
What makes Chenghai different
Chenghai is not a single market you walk through in a morning. It is a whole district built around toys, with thousands of toy, gift and animation manufacturers and tens of thousands of related businesses packed into streets of multi-storey buildings. The strength of the place is that the entire chain lives there: design and development, mould making, production, printing, packaging and trade all sit within the cluster.
That completeness is why prices can be sharp and why new designs appear so fast. A factory can take an idea from drawing to moulded, packed product without leaving the district.
What the cluster is strong on
Chenghai's deepest strengths are in the kinds of toys that move volume in Nigeria:
- Plastic toys of every description, the core of the cluster.
- Remote-control and battery-operated items, including toy cars and drones.
- Dolls, figures and licensed-style characters.
- Educational and building-block style toys.
- Party goods, gifts and seasonal novelties that pair naturally with a toy order.
If your range is general gifts and small commodities rather than toys specifically, you may still find a broader spread at Yiwu, covered in our Yiwu first buyer guide. Yiwu aggregates everything; Chenghai goes deep on toys at the source.
For toys, Chenghai is the source and Yiwu is the supermarket. Buy depth at the source and convenience at the supermarket.
How buying works on the ground
Large wholesale toy markets in the district display finished products, with separate areas for raw materials and components. As in other Chinese clusters, the stalls mostly show samples and take orders rather than handing you bulk stock. You agree a price and a minimum order quantity, the goods are produced or gathered, and they flow to your forwarder for consolidation.
A first trip should look like this:
- Decide your seasons. Toys are seasonal, so plan around your selling calendar and lead times before you go.
- Walk one product type at a time. Photograph each item with its stall card and noted MOQ.
- Test the function. For anything with a motor, battery or remote, make it work in front of the seller before you order.
- Check safety and packaging. Retail packaging and any markings matter for how the goods sell and clear.
- Confirm copies versus originals. Licensed-look characters carry real risk, so know what you are actually buying.
Watch the calendar
Because so much of Chenghai's output is exported and a great deal is seasonal, lead times stretch as global buyers chase the same Christmas window. Order early. Trying to place a large toy order in the late autumn for the same season is how buyers miss their selling period entirely.
Paying Chenghai suppliers
Toy factories in Chenghai are paid in RMB, typically a deposit to start production and the balance before the goods ship. Whether you close the deal in the district or reorder a hit line from Lagos for next season, the payment runs the same way. When it is time to pay the deposit or the balance, you can make a request to settle the supplier in RMB from Naira at a locked rate, with a receipt for each leg. Find your winners at the source, order early for the season, and Chenghai keeps your shelves full.
