Foshan: sourcing furniture and ceramics
Foshan is the world's furniture and ceramics capital. Here is how Lecong and the Shunde clusters work and how to buy furniture and sanitaryware well.
If you furnish homes, hotels, offices or showrooms, the single most important city in China for you is Foshan, in the Pearl River Delta just west of Guangzhou. Foshan is where furniture and home building materials are made and traded at a scale that is hard to picture until you stand in it. Its Lecong district is widely called the largest furniture distribution centre in the world, a strip of malls that runs for kilometres.
Why Foshan, not Guangzhou, for furniture
Guangzhou gets the Nigerian buyer's attention because of fashion and general goods, covered in our Guangzhou wholesale markets guide. But for furniture and ceramics, the real depth is a short trip away in Foshan. The two cities are close enough that many buyers base in Guangzhou and travel out to Foshan for a focused furniture day.
What makes Foshan special is that the whole chain sits in one cluster: materials, design, manufacturing and trade within a tight radius. You can see finished sofas, source the hardware that goes into them, and meet the factory that builds them, often in the same afternoon.
Lecong, the furniture mile
Lecong, in Shunde district, is the trading heart. It is made up of a great many large furnishing malls holding thousands of distributors and a deep base of manufacturers behind them. Inside you will find:
- Living room, bedroom and dining furniture across every price tier.
- Office and hotel furniture, often the strongest fit for bulk buyers.
- Bathroom furniture, sanitaryware and the hardware and accessories that complete a fit-out.
The scale means you must plan by category and by budget tier, or you will spend a day walking and buy nothing.
Ceramics and sanitaryware
Foshan is just as known for ceramics and sanitaryware as it is for furniture, with tile and bathroom-ware production concentrated in its own part of the city. For a Nigerian buyer doing a building project or stocking a home-improvement business, this one-stop pairing of furniture and building materials is the reason the trip is worth the airfare.
Foshan is a city you visit with a packing list, not a wish list. Decide the rooms you are fitting out before you arrive and shop tier by tier.
A focused Foshan buying day
- Set your tier first. Budget, mid-range or premium. Walk only that tier or you will compare things you cannot use.
- Photograph everything with the stall card. You will not remember which of forty similar sofas was which by evening.
- Confirm what is in stock versus made to order. Furniture lead times are long, so know what you are agreeing to.
- Check packing and freight early. Furniture is bulky and easily damaged, so how it is crated matters as much as the price.
- Negotiate the full container, not the single piece. Your leverage is the size of the order, especially on a mixed load.
The freight reality
Furniture is volume, not weight, so it almost always moves by sea, and it is fragile. Agree clearly how each piece is packed and crated, and lean on your forwarder to consolidate a mixed order into a clean container load. Damage in transit is the most common way a good Foshan deal turns sour, so spend time on packing while you are still face to face with the supplier.
Paying Foshan suppliers
Furniture and ceramics suppliers in Foshan are paid in RMB like everyone else, with a deposit on order and the balance before shipping. That payment structure is exactly where a locked rate and a clean receipt matter, because the sums are larger than a box of accessories. When your deposit or balance is due, you can make a request to settle the supplier in RMB from Naira, deposit now and balance later, each with its own record. Plan the rooms, protect the packing, and Foshan becomes the most productive furniture sourcing you will do anywhere.
